AFHVS 2016 presidential address: Decoding diversity in the food system: wheat and bread in North America.Philip H. Howard - 2016 - Agriculture and Human Values 33 (4):953-960.
Diversity is important for the resilience of food systems, as well as for its own sake. Just how diverse are the systems that produce our food? I explore this question with a focus on wheat and bread and North America, and even more specifically in baking, milling and farming. Although the opacity of food and agricultural systems makes definitive answers difficult, these segments appear to be increasingly uniform with respect to ownership, geography, varieties and genes. There are also important countertrends, (...)

    A reexamination of the internal auditors' code of ethics.Philip H. Siegel, John O'Shaughnessy & John T. Rigsby - 1995 - Journal of Business Ethics 14 (11):949 - 957.
This study empirically examined the views of Certified Internal Auditors (CIAs) concerning the role of Code of Ethics for members of the Institute of Internal Auditors. It is a continuation of an earlier study which examined the usefulness of the Code to CIAs. Among the questions asked were what is the primary reason for the Code of Ethics, how useful is it, have you used it, should more enforcement actions be taken against members who violate the Code, and what are (...)

Practice and Forgetting Effects on Vocabulary Memory: An Activation‐Based Model of the Spacing Effect.Philip I. Pavlik & John R. Anderson - 2005 - Cognitive Science 29 (4):559-586.
An experiment was performed to investigate the effects of practice and spacing on retention of Japanese–English vocabulary paired associates. The relative benefit of spacing increased with increased practice and with longer retention intervals. Data were fitted with an activation‐based memory model, which proposes that each time an item is practiced it receives an increment of strength but that these increments decay as a power function of time. The rate of decay for each presentation depended on the activation at the time (...)

Substance Abuse during Pregnancy: Clinical and Public Health Approaches.Philip H. Jos, Martin Perlmutter & Mary Faith Marshall - 2003 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 31 (3):340-350.
The treatment of pregnant women addicted to drugs provides an especially important and illustrative example of how political and popular demands can successfully challenge professional ethical norms associated with clinical medicine — norms such as confidentiality, patient autonomy, and the right to consent to and to refuse treatment. One increasingly popular policy approach is to limit patient autonomy by coercing women in an attempt to change their behavior, either by involuntary civil commitment or by imprisoning them for drug abuse or (...)

    Epithelial stem cells.Philip H. Jones - 1997 - Bioessays 19 (8):683-690.
New molecular markers for epidermal stem cells have enabled their isolation both in vitro and from the epidermis lying between hair follicles. Micro‐dissection experiments have localised a second population of stem cells within hair follicles. Epidermal stem cells have a patterned distribution in vivo. The patterning can be reconstituted in vitro, showing that it is generated by interactions between keratinocytes and that the differentiation of epidermal stem cells is regulated by signals from other keratinocytes. Recent evidence from transgenic mice suggests (...)

The Charleston Policy on Cocaine Use During Pregnancy: A Cautionary Tale.Philip H. Jos, Mary Faith Marshall & Martin Perlmutter - 1995 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 23 (2):120-128.
The conflict between pregnant women freely using cocaine and the well-being of fetuses presents a difficult social problem. Since 1985, at least 200 women, in thirty states, have been criminally prosecuted for using illicit drugs or alcohol during pregnancy. Such policies enjoy considerable public and political support. Nonetheless, treatment programs that include referral to law enforcement officials raise serious ethical and legal issues for hospitals and health care providers. In this paper, we assess the development of one medical university's controversial (...)

    Meta-relation and ontology closure in Conceptual Structure Theory.Philip H. P. Nguyen, Ken Kaneiwa, Dan R. Corbett & Minh-Quang Nguyen - 2009 - Artificial Intelligence and Law 17 (4):291-320.
This paper presents an enhanced ontology formalization, combining previous work in Conceptual Structure Theory and Order-Sorted Logic. Most existing ontology formalisms place greater importance on concept types, but in this paper we focus on relation types, which are in essence predicates on concept types. We formalize the notion of ‘predicate of predicates’ as meta-relation type and introduce the new hierarchy of meta-relation types as part of the ontology definition. The new notion of closure of a relation or meta-relation type is (...)
